Welcome to the Tropical Botanical Garden in Belém, Lisbon. Spanning seven hectares, this enchanting garden was established on January twenty-fourth, nineteen hundred six, originally named the Colonial Garden by King Carlos the First. In nineteen twelve, it moved to its current location near the Palácio de Belém.

As you walk through the garden, you’ll notice vintage greenhouses filled with vibrant tropical and subtropical plants. Over six hundred species thrive here, including rare and endangered trees like the dragon tree and araucaria. Listen for the graceful calls of peacocks and other free-roaming birds that add to the garden’s lively atmosphere.

Explore historic buildings such as the Casa do Fresco from the seventeenth century and the elegant Palácio dos Condes da Calheta. Admire beautiful marble statues by artists like Bernardino Ludovisi and Joaquim Machado de Castro, which enhance the garden’s artistic charm.

The garden played a significant role in Portugal’s colonial history, showcasing plants and cultural elements from Portuguese discoveries. It was part of the nineteen-forties Portuguese World Exhibition and has been carefully preserved by the University of Lisbon since two thousand and fifteen.

Modern visitors can enjoy the garden’s mobile application, offering augmented reality experiences in multiple languages, making your visit interactive and informative. Accessibility options ensure everyone can enjoy the beauty and knowledge the garden offers.
