Inspired by Rio de Janeiro’s Christ the Redeemer, it was envisioned in nineteen thirty-four by Cardinal Dom Manuel Gonçalves Cerejeira during his visit to Brazil. Construction began in nineteen forty-nine and was completed ten years later, welcoming three hundred thousand people at its inauguration.
