Audio GuideOceanário de Lisboa
Modern, waterside aquarium with ocean habitats for sharks, rays, penguins & tropical fish.
Welcome to the audio guide of the Lisbon Oceanarium, a premier attraction nestled in the vibrant Parque das Nações district. Opened on the twenty-second of May, nineteen ninety-eight, during Expo ninety-eight, the Oceanarium was envisioned as a bridge between Lisbon’s rich maritime heritage and the future of ocean conservation. Designed by American architect Peter Chermayeff, its striking structure resembles an aircraft carrier gracefully anchored by the water’s edge.
In two thousand eleven, architect Pedro Campos Costa expanded the facility with the Sea Building, adding modern exhibition spaces, a welcoming auditorium, and delightful amenities like the Tejo restaurant. Today, the Oceanarium stands as the largest in the Iberian Peninsula, renowned worldwide and honored as the best aquarium by TripAdvisor in two thousand eighteen.
Step inside and immerse yourself in over seven and a half million liters of water, home to eight thousand marine organisms across five hundred species. The centerpiece, a magnificent five-million-liter central tank, represents the Global Ocean, where sharks, rays, and vibrant tropical fish glide effortlessly. Surrounding this are habitats depicting the North Atlantic, Antarctic, Temperate Pacific, and Tropical Indian Ocean, each offering unique glimpses into diverse marine ecosystems.
Our friendly mascot, Vasco, named after the legendary navigator Vasco da Gama, welcomes visitors of all ages. Families can engage in educational programs and activities like guided tours and interactive experiences that inspire a love for marine life and conservation. The Oceanarium plays a crucial role in marine research, supporting biodiversity projects and sustainable practices.
Committed to environmental sustainability, the Oceanarium has earned prestigious ISO certifications for quality and eco-management. With approximately one million visitors each year, it remains Portugal’s most beloved cultural attraction, offering exceptional facilities and amenities to ensure a memorable visit.
