Landmark museum with preserved animal specimens, like fish & birds, plus anthropological artifacts.
The National Museum of Natural History and Science in Lisbon is a captivating destination for curious minds. Founded in the nineteenth century as the Royal Museum of Natural History and Botanical Garden, it has evolved through the years by merging with other institutions. In two thousand and eleven, the museum united with the Science Museum, the Lisbon Botanical Garden, and the Astronomical Observatory, creating a rich and diverse complex. Despite a tragic fire in nineteen seventy-eight that destroyed many valuable collections, the museum rebuilt and continued to grow. Today, visitors can explore extensive exhibits in zoology, featuring preserved fish and birds, anthropology with fascinating human artifacts, mineralogy, and paleontology. The historic buildings, including the old Polytechnic School, add to the museum’s charm. Managed by the University of Lisbon, MUHNAC not only showcases scientific treasures but also engages the community through current exhibitions, educational programs, and research activities. The lush Botanical Garden offers a peaceful retreat with a variety of plant species, while the Astronomical Observatory provides insights into the stars. As a cornerstone of Portugal’s scientific and cultural heritage, the museum invites visitors of all ages to discover the wonders of nature and science in an inspiring and accessible setting.
