Originally established by the Brotherhood of Our Lady of Guia in fifteen twenty-three, the lighthouse served as a crucial aid for navigation, using oil lights to steer ships safely away from rocky shores. Surviving the devastating earthquake of seventeen fifty-five, it was rebuilt in seventeen fifty-eight under the vision of the Marquis of Pombal, symbolizing resilience and progress. At that time, sixteen Argand lamps illuminated the night, their glow reaching twelve nautical miles out to sea.

Today, the Guia Lighthouse has embraced modern technology with a third-order Fresnel lens that extends its reach to eighteen nautical miles. Automated since nineteen eighty-two, it no longer requires a keeper on site. Instead, a sophisticated monitoring system ensures that any issues are promptly addressed through remote alerts, maintaining its role in protecting vessels approaching Lisbon’s port.

Beyond its functional significance, the lighthouse holds cultural and religious importance. Nossa Senhora da Guia, the patroness of sailors, is celebrated with vibrant festivals in places like Vila do Conde and Salvador in Brazil.
