Designed by Francisco Manuel de Melo Breyner and Andrade Corvo, with the help of German gardener Edmund Goeze and French botanist Jules Daveau, the garden features a diverse collection of plants from around the world. You can find species from regions like New Zealand, Australia, China, Japan, and South America. The garden is home to one of the largest collections of palm trees and ancient cycads, often called living fossils.
In two thousand and ten, Jardim Botânico de Lisboa was honored as a National Monument, recognizing its historical and botanical importance. Between two thousand and sixteen and two thousand and eighteen, the garden underwent significant restoration, improving irrigation, lighting, and infrastructure to enhance the visitor experience.
Walking through the garden, you'll encounter beautiful pathways, serene lakes, and cascading waterfalls. Unique areas like the Garden of Onions and Mount of Eucalyptuses offer peaceful spots for relaxation and contemplation. The garden also features statues with historical bullet holes, adding a touch of intrigue to the landscape.
