Welcome to the Basílica da Estrela, one of Lisbon’s most stunning churches. Built in the late eighteenth century, this ornate building showcases beautiful Baroque and Neoclassical styles. As you approach, you’ll notice its twin bell towers rising gracefully and the central relief of the Sacred Heart of Jesus adorning the façade. The exterior is decorated with intricate statues created by talented artists, adding to its majestic appearance.

Step inside, and you’ll be greeted by a large dome that bathes the interior in natural light. The floors are adorned with gray, pink, and yellow marble, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. One of the highlights is the magnificent nativity scene, featuring over five hundred detailed cork and terracotta figures that bring the story to life.

This basilica holds significant historical importance as it was commissioned by Queen Maria the First and King Pedro the Third. They built it in gratitude for the birth of their heir, although sadly, their son passed away before its completion. Queen Maria the First is also buried here, making it a special place of remembrance. The basilica is not only a national monument but also the first church in the world dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
