Welcome to Lisbon! One of the city’s must-see landmarks is the stunning Arco da Rua Augusta, located at the northern end of Praça do Comércio. This magnificent triumphal arch was built to celebrate Lisbon’s recovery after the devastating earthquake of seventeen fifty-five. Designed by Eugénio dos Santos and completed by Veríssimo José da Costa in eighteen seventy-three, the arch stands as a symbol of resilience and grandeur.
As you approach, you’ll notice the impressive sculptures by Célestin Anatole Calmels and Vítor Bastos. On the left side, historical figures like Nuno Álvares Pereira and the Marquis of Pombal gaze over the city, while Vasco da Gama and Viriato adorn the right side. These larger-than-life figures celebrate Portugal’s rich history and exploration.
At the top of the arch, an inspiring Latin inscription reads “The Virtues of the Greatest,” reflecting the might of the Portuguese Empire. Surrounding the arch are allegorical figures representing Glory, Valor, and Genius, adding depth and meaning to this architectural masterpiece. Reclining figures symbolize the Tagus and Douro rivers, essential to Lisbon’s life and trade.
In two thousand thirteen, a viewing platform was added, allowing visitors to climb via elevator or stairs for breathtaking panoramic views of Lisbon’s skyline, including the Sé Cathedral and São Jorge Castle. Since opening, the arch has welcomed hundreds of thousands of visitors, becoming a beloved National Monument since nineteen ten.
Managed by the local municipality since twenty twenty-one, Arco da Rua Augusta marks the entrance to the vibrant Baixa neighborhood. Don’t miss the charming clock on the backside as you explore.
