Time Out Market Lisboa is a vibrant culinary destination in Lisbon, where tradition meets modernity. Originally established as the Ribeira Nova Market, the building first opened its doors in eighteen ninety-two. It was the brainchild of architect Frederico Ressano Garcia, who also designed some of the city’s renowned avenues and neighbourhoods. This iconic venue has seen many transformations over the years.

The market's history traces back to the aftermath of the seventeen fifty-five earthquake, which prompted King José to commission a new hall dedicated to fish trading. Despite a significant fire in eighteen ninety-three, the market continued to evolve. When it was rebuilt in nineteen thirty, it featured a majestic dome and decorative tiles that still mesmerise visitors to this day.

For most of its existence, the market was central to wholesale and fresh fish trading. However, with the dawn of the twenty-first century, its role began to change. In two thousand, the market started to transition from its traditional function. By two thousand and one, its lower level was open to cultural events, and in two thousand and fourteen, Time Out assumed management. This shift introduced an array of thirty food stalls, several bars, shopping areas, a cooking school, and even a theatre.

Nowadays, visitors can enjoy everything from traditional Portuguese dishes and fresh seafood to cutting-edge modern cuisine. The market is enlivened by cultural events, including music performances and traditional dances known as Bailes da Ribeira, which contribute to its vibrant and inviting atmosphere. Time Out Market Lisboa is a unique venue where the city’s rich history blends seamlessly with contemporary flavours, offering an unforgettable experience for all who visit.
