At a towering height of over one hundred metres, this statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, with open arms, serves as a symbol of peace and thanksgiving. Inspired by the famous Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro, the idea was first conceived in nineteen thirty-four by Cardinal Dom Manuel Gonçalves Cerejeira during a visit to Brazil. Construction began in nineteen forty-nine and was completed a decade later, drawing crowds of three hundred thousand to its inauguration.

The statue itself stands twenty-eight metres tall, with arms wide open towards the city beneath, exuding a sense of calm. Inside, the chapel houses sacred relics, offering a tranquil retreat for pilgrims and visitors alike.
From the sanctuary, enjoy sweeping views of Lisbon’s skyline and the iconic twenty-fifth of April Bridge. The area around Cristo Rei has witnessed significant events, including the Carnation Revolution of nineteen seventy-four, securing its place in history.
