A vibrant pink promenade teeming with street art, distinctive bars, and a bustling nightlife in a once rough-edged district.

Welcome to Lisbon's Pink Street, officially known as Rua Nova do Carvalho. Just a short walk from the river and Time Out Market, you'll notice the pink pavement beneath your feet. Painted in two thousand thirteen, this vibrant hue was part of an initiative to rejuvenate Cais do Sodré. This area was historically famous for its seafaring red-light district. The transformation was the brainchild of architect José Adrião in collaboration with the Absolut vodka company, turning the neighbourhood into a vibrant and safer area for everyone.

Cais do Sodré hasn't always been this lively. In the eighteen hundreds, it was a rough and tumble area where high society rubbed shoulders with dock workers and sailors in search of excitement. Over the years, nightclubs like Jamaica, Europa, and Tokyo made their mark on the scene. Unique venues like Sol e Pesca, with its amusing canned fish theme, and MusicBox, renowned for its late-night atmosphere, became firm favourites. Pensão Amor is notable for its journey from a "love hotel" to a trendy bar and creative hub.

The street’s shift from gritty to fashionable has received mixed reactions. Today, it's home to classic bars, chic restaurants, and vibrant street art. In June, colourful umbrellas are suspended above to celebrate LGBTQIA+ Pride. Weekends bring a bustling energy to the area, while afternoons offer a more laid-back atmosphere.

Opinions are divided among locals about the transformation. There is a boost in business and safety, but also increased rents and noisier nights. Some lament the loss of authenticity, while others view it as a renewal of Lisbon's creative spirit. Stroll along Pink Street to witness a city in perpetual evolution. Visit in the afternoon for a quieter experience, or come at night to enjoy the lively nightlife at its peak.
