Welcome to the audio guide of the Lisbon Oceanarium, a leading attraction situated in the lively district of Parque das Nações. It first opened on the twenty-second of May, nineteen ninety-eight, as part of Expo ninety-eight. The Oceanarium was designed to link Lisbon’s rich maritime history with the future of ocean conservation. The striking structure, crafted by American architect Peter Chermayeff, resembles an aircraft carrier elegantly moored at the water's edge.

In two thousand eleven, architect Pedro Campos Costa enhanced the venue with the addition of the Sea Building. This expansion introduced contemporary exhibition areas, a welcoming auditorium, and facilities like the inviting restaurant Tejo. Today, the Oceanarium is the largest in the Iberian Peninsula, renowned globally and celebrated as the world's best aquarium by TripAdvisor in two thousand eighteen.

Step inside and explore over seven and a half million litres of water, home to eight thousand marine creatures across five hundred species. The highlight is a breathtaking five-million-litre central tank symbolising the Global Ocean, where sharks, rays, and vibrant tropical fish swim gracefully. It is encircled by exhibits representing the North Atlantic, Antarctic, Temperate Pacific, and Tropical Indian Ocean, each showcasing distinct marine ecosystems.

Our cheerful mascot, Vasco, named after the famed navigator Vasco da Gama, welcomes visitors of all ages. Families can participate in educational programmes and activities including guided tours and interactive experiences that foster an appreciation for marine life and conservation. The Oceanarium is pivotal in marine research, promoting biodiversity projects and sustainable practices.
