The Moors built this stronghold to safeguard the region and command key maritime routes to Lisbon. Within its robust walls, the Islamic Quarter once flourished with a lively community, buzzing with cultural and daily activities. The architecture of the castle showcases formidable military walls, round turrets, and silos hewn into the rock, which were used for storing grain and other provisions.

In eleven forty-seven, Christian forces led by Afonso Henriques seized Sintra, marking a significant turning point in the area's history. The castle subsequently became part of a medieval town, complete with the Chapel of São Pedro de Penaferrim and other notable structures. Throughout the centuries, the area has undergone many transformations, evolving from a Moorish bastion to a tranquil medieval settlement.

In the nineteenth century, King Ferdinand the Second rejuvenated the castle, enhancing its romantic medieval character. Since nineteen seventy-six, archaeological excavations have revealed numerous artefacts, offering insights into the lives of those who resided here in times past. These findings underscore the castle's rich history and the diverse peoples who have inhabited it.

Today, the Castle of the Moors is recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, renowned for its historical importance and stunning natural surroundings. The cool, moist climate has aided in preserving this landmark, allowing visitors to explore its well-kept walls and intricate architectural features.
