Initially crafted in the eighteenth century by Reinaldo Manuel dos Santos to lengthen the Aqueduto das Águas Livres, the plans were altered following the significant earthquake of seventeen fifty-five.

A monument in honour of Eduardo Coelho, who founded the Diário de Notícias newspaper, stands proudly with a statue of a newspaper delivery boy at its base. Near the balustrade, an azulejo panel assists in identifying the numerous landmarks visible from the viewpoint, including the striking São Jorge Castle and the historic Sé de Lisboa cathedral.
