Nestled in the historic Alfama district of Lisbon, the Museu do Fado invites visitors to delve into the soulful realm of traditional Fado music. Since opening its doors to the public in nineteen ninety-eight, this museum has served as a sanctuary for both Fado enthusiasts and inquisitive travellers. Upon entering, the rich melodies of the Portuguese guitar and emotive vocals envelop you, reflecting the deep roots of Fado in Lisbon's culture.
The museum boasts a vast collection of musical instruments, vintage recordings, captivating photographs, and personal artefacts from legendary artists such as Amália Rodrigues, whose legacy has profoundly influenced Fado. Housed in the beautifully restored nineteenth-century Estação Elevatória de Águas de Alfama, the building seamlessly fuses historical architecture with modern displays, creating an engaging atmosphere.
Permanent exhibitions trace two centuries of Fado's evolution, highlighting the genre's resilience amidst cultural and technological transformations. Interactive audiovisual displays bring the stories of Fado to life, while temporary exhibitions regularly introduce fresh perspectives. Additionally, the museum launched a Digital Sound Archive in two thousand sixteen, providing online access to thousands of historic recordings.
Open from Tuesday to Sunday, from ten in the morning to six in the evening, the Museu do Fado welcomes everyone to explore and celebrate this iconic Portuguese art form.
