Estufa Fria is a magnificent greenhouse located in Lisbon's Eduardo VII Park. Since it opened in nineteen thirty-three, following the vision of the talented architect Raul Carapinha, it has transformed an old basalt quarry into a lush botanical paradise. Upon entering, you are enveloped by the cool, moist air and the fragrant aroma of flowers in bloom. The greenhouse is organised into three distinct sections: the Cold Greenhouse, the Hot Greenhouse, and the Sweet Greenhouse. The Cold Greenhouse, the largest of the three, showcases vibrant azaleas and camellias from across the globe, with its wooden slats casting a natural play of light and shadow. In the Hot Greenhouse, tropical plants like coffee and mango flourish in a warmer setting, while the Sweet Greenhouse is home to resilient succulents, including cacti and aloe.

Within Estufa Fria, gentle waterfalls tumble into tranquil pools, and elegantly sculpted statues by celebrated Portuguese artists lend an artistic flair to the surroundings. The Hot and Sweet Greenhouses were added in nineteen seventy-five, enriching the plant variety and increasing the garden's diversity. Between two thousand and nine and two thousand and eleven, comprehensive renovations were carried out to ensure Estufa Fria remained a vibrant and welcoming space for visitors.

In two thousand and sixteen, the Central Interpretive Centre was unveiled, offering exhibitions and activities highlighting the botanical and ecological importance of the greenhouse. Today, Estufa Fria stands as a cherished attraction for tourists, providing a serene retreat where lush greenery harmonises with refined architecture. Whether ambling along the meandering paths or relaxing by the serene water features, Estufa Fria presents a unique insight into Lisbon’s natural splendour and cultural heritage, making it an essential stop on any exploration of the city.
