The Church of Santo Condestável stands proudly in Campo de Ourique, Lisbon. Built in a Neo-Gothic style, this church pays tribute to D. Nuno Álvares Pereira, a celebrated Portuguese general and patron saint known as Saint Nuno of Santa Maria. Designed by architect Vasco Regaleira, the church was inaugurated on the thirteenth of August, nineteen fifty-one, marking the historic anniversary of the Battle of Aljubarrota.

As you approach, the main façade features the royal coat of arms of the second dynasty and a sculptural ensemble by Leopoldo de Almeida. The sculptures depict Saint Nuno flanked by angels, along with images of Our Lady of Mount Carmel and Saint George. Inside the church, you'll find vibrant stained glass designed by Almada Negreiros and a fresco in the main chapel illustrating the glorification of Saint Nuno, painted by Portela Júnior.

Feel the coolness of Sintra granite contrasting with the white stone walls, reflecting a blend of nobility and humility. The interior features three naves, with a soaring central space and intricate arches. Beneath the altar reside the relics of Saint Nuno, crafted by Domingos Soares Branco.

Situated at the crossroads of Saraiva de Carvalho and Francisco Metrass streets, the church is close to the Campo de Ourique Market. You can attend Sunday mass at half past ten in the morning or seven in the evening, or visit during weekdays at half past nine. Guided tours are available by appointment, allowing you to explore its history, art, and tranquil atmosphere.

Saint Nuno Álvares Pereira, born in thirteen sixty and canonised in two thousand nine by Pope Benedict the Sixteenth, continues to symbolise Portuguese independence and bravery. His legacy is celebrated within these walls, making the Church of Santo Condestável a must-visit landmark for those interested in a blend of history, culture, and architectural beauty.
