Welcome to Lisbon! One of the city's must-see attractions is the breathtaking Arco da Rua Augusta, situated at the northern end of the Praça do Comércio. This impressive triumphal arch was constructed to commemorate Lisbon's recovery following the catastrophic earthquake of seventeen fifty-five. Initially designed by Eugénio dos Santos and finished by Veríssimo José da Costa in eighteen seventy-three, the arch stands as a testament to resilience and splendour.

As you draw nearer, you'll be captivated by the impressive sculptures crafted by Célestin Anatole Calmels and Vítor Bastos. On the left, historical figures like Nuno Álvares Pereira and the Marquis of Pombal overlook the city, while Vasco da Gama and Viriato feature on the right. These towering figures celebrate Portugal’s rich history and exploration.

Atop the arch, an inspirational Latin inscription reads "The Virtues of the Greatest," highlighting the power of the Portuguese Empire. Surrounding the structure are symbolic figures representing Glory, Valour, and Genius, adding depth and significance to this architectural marvel. Reclining sculptures symbolise the Tagus and Douro rivers, vital to Lisbon’s commerce and life.

In two thousand and thirteen, a viewing platform was introduced, allowing visitors to ascend by lift or stairs for stunning panoramic views of Lisbon's skyline, including the Sé Cathedral and São Jorge Castle. Since its opening, the arch has welcomed numerous visitors and has been treasured as a National Monument since nineteen ten.

Under the care of the local council since twenty twenty-one, the Arco da Rua Augusta marks the gateway to the lively Baixa district.
