Welcome to the 25th of April Bridge, one of Lisbon's most iconic landmarks. Stretching for over two kilometres, this magnificent suspension bridge connects the vibrant city of Lisbon with the charming town of Almada across the River Tagus. Inaugurated on the 6th of August, 1966, it was initially named the Salazar Bridge, but was renamed after the Carnation Revolution in 1974, symbolising Portugal's strides towards freedom and modernisation.

As you approach the bridge, its striking international orange colour catches your eye, reminiscent of San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge. Standing tall at 190 metres, the bridge's towers dominate the skyline, while the roadway sits 70 metres above the river, offering breathtaking views of Lisbon's rooftops and the sparkling Tagus below.

The 25th of April Bridge is not just an engineering wonder; it’s a vital thoroughfare for daily life. With six lanes for vehicles and two electrified railway lines, it handles approximately 150,000 cars and 157 trains each day. This dual-purpose design ensures seamless travel between the north and south banks, making it one of Europe's busiest bridges.

Completed six months ahead of schedule by the United States Steel Export Company, the bridge has transformed over the years. In 2014, it was recognised as the most beautiful bridge in Europe, a testament to its elegant design and significance. Visitors can walk to the miradouro, a viewing platform opened in 2017, to enjoy panoramic views of the city and river.

The 25th of April Bridge is more than just a transport link; it is a symbol of Portugal's resilient spirit and growth. It plays an essential role in the urban and economic development of the region and serves as a cultural hub, hosting events like the annual Lisbon Half-Marathon. Whether you're driving across, taking the train, or simply admiring it from afar, the bridge offers a remarkable glimpse into Lisbon's rich history and architectural beauty.

Enjoy your visit to the 25th of April Bridge and take in the captivating views that capture the essence of Portugal.
